Snow!

Well spring still seems to be on hold in the UK as we are battered by the "Beast from The East" and Storm Emma.  Somehow the two names don't really go hand in hand, I mean The Beast is a good description of the snow and cold weather we are getting but Emma? sounds a little more tame. However for parts of the UK bearing the brunt the weather is anything but tame.

Fortunately in our little corner the weather is not too bad, we have had a few drops o snow but nothing too significant. Roads and Travel has some disruptions but main routes are open, trains are running and most flights from the local airport are still running.

But with snow and tropical plants comes some interesting photo opportunities, the picture above is pretty much from the doors of the conservatory, most of the plants in the garden should be unaffected by the weather (the lowest temperature has been -7C / 19f, so cold but not too bad. The more tender plants are mostly tucked up in greenhouses, although theres the odd one that we had hoped would be fine still out. Lets see what happens when it warms up.

As you can see in the photo above, not even the cats have made a mark in the snow, this path is usually their highway to exploring neighbouring gardens. The cats have pretty much stayed in - occasionally begging to go out, before changing their minds pretty quickly when given an opportunity!

The Schefflera rhododendrifolia above looks sad for itself, but this plant has seen far worse, so not expecting any problems from it when the snow leaves us.

Slightly unusual for us, we have some ice on the pond, this is the goldfish pond and moving water usually stops it from freezing. The large koi pond was ice free - but it does have a roof over it.

I doubt we will be sitting out much just yet!, but hopefully the spring like weather will be here soon!

  1. Aren't snow-topped tropical plants marvellous?! We have been under snow since Monday evening and it is still snowing now. I have never been so cold - I just hope the plants survive. Stay safe and warm - just think - you'll be sitting on those seats in no time at all!

  2. I love your calm attitude! Now I can enjoy the amazing photos without worrying about your garden or the fishies. What a Beast this storm is!

  3. It is odd to see your garden covered in snow! I hope plants and fish make it through the battle with the Beast unscathed.

  4. It's so strange seeing all your tropicals and semi-tropicals under snow. I agree that Emmma is not a proper name for a storm like this. It's the name of one of Jane Austen's heroines, a busybody but mild-mannered. Hope things warm up soon.

  5. I hope you're right about the plants resilience but it's not been this cold for some years. I had a walk around this afternoon and the agapanthus that I brought back from my mum's garden are looking awful so I really hope they perk up next week when it's warmer. I'm not a big fan of snow because of the damage that it does. I'm also getting a bit of cabin fever now - after just one week!! Stay warm and have a good weekend!

  6. I hope everything survives the snow and the cold temperatures. I’m amazed by the resilience of plants. It’s usually me who suffers more!

  7. I'm grateful that snow is rarely seen in my neck of the woods but I have to say your snow-bedecked tropicals look pretty cool.

  8. Snow and such cold temperatures this close to spring are a little disheartening. Your kitties are wise to stay inside even though your garden still looks inviting if a bit chilly.

  9. It looks as if we had similar amount to you which has nearly all thawed out today. Your exotics look most attractive with a light snowy coat.

  11. Your garden looks great with a little bit of snow, a little ironic for such tropical-looking plants. I got enough snow to bury things a little more.
