Droog is a design company based in Amsterdam and their studio curates various modern objects for the home and other spaces. Since we're in the city we paid their studio a visit, to check out their items and perhaps take in some inspiration as well (we're into modern decorative objects and home furnishings too as some of you may have figured out already).
The studio had some very nice and cutting edge objects for the home but the biggest surprise was their courtyard, a surreal looking garden full of modern....art? Conceptual perhaps.
Some of you may shudder at the idea of art in the garden whilst some embrace it wholeheartedly. So depends on which camp you are you will either like or loathe this space. If you like it perhaps you like modern items too.
We liked it, it looked fun and quirky but we like it for what it is, a courtyard in a shop/studio used to demonstrate concepts and and modern pieces of garden/outdoor products. It was a fun surprise for sure!
No garden products went home with us though, but a few indoor light fittings did!
Mark :-)
For some reason, modern brings to my mind clean lines, angles, simplicity. This courtyard looks a bit different from my notion with all of its curves and presence of so many objects. I love the screen with the crooked mirrors very much!
ReplyDeleteQuirky springs to mind Peter. I suppose being essentially a shop they have to display plenty in a small space, and also depends what they're featuring for the moment. I can imagine their display changes pretty regularly too, with so many new products continually coming out.
DeleteI love coming across quirky spaces like this...even the ones I wouldn't be caught dead with.
ReplyDeleteSame here Ricki. The garden looks fun where it is and some elements may be fun to imbibe.
DeleteI like those big sunflowers!!! and the things that are hanging. It is a fun courtyard. I thought I didn't like art in the garden but after seeing many gardens in the Portland Fling now I like it.
ReplyDeleteThose sunflowers are cool aren't they Lisa? Sort of reminds me of things I've seen in show gardens before. Some are cool in isolation, together thebspace is like a fantasy garden.
DeleteI'm sorry, I just can't get "A Clockwork Orange" out of my head as I read this!
ReplyDeleteHaha surreal looking place isn't it John? I wonder what fantasy they will concoct later on when they change displays...
DeleteIt's interesting but for some reason it brings to mind Alice in Wonderland for me. It may be the mirrors, which give off a fun house vibe. I liked the chair.
ReplyDeleteThat came to mind too Kris, I think it was the oversized wire flowers for me.
DeleteI think I like how Ricki phrased it. I too would have been pleased to discover this, but not ready to take any home.
ReplyDeleteGreat to look at Loree but best to leave them where they are....
DeleteI love the look, but not in my garden. I have always enjoyed 'quirky' and am happy to incorporate it, but not so sure here.
ReplyDeleteOne or two of similar items would still be a safe bet Libby
DeleteDear Mark, I am in the art camp :-)! I think that art can enhance a garden tremendously, if it is chosen and placed well. In my opinion the garden that you feature in your post is very well designed and the objects suit it perfectly. Besides that they bring color and interest to a rather small garden even in winter. What more can you ask for?
ReplyDeleteWarm regards,
Christina
That's true Christina, it's a fabulous space especially in the middle of a cosmopolitan city :)
DeleteWhat a fun space, lots of quirky ideas, though perhaps hard to envision using them in the garden when there are so many crammed together. Difficult when you are a shop trying to sell, and I tend to prefer simpler art in gardens so that the plants are still the main attraction, but I would have thoroughly enjoyed browsing around it.
ReplyDeleteIt was a nice surprise Janet :) too much in one space for a real garden but for a shop it looks fine.
DeleteI am sure I could have found something I would like, though this does not look like my typical garden shop! I like art in the garden if it is appropriate to the setting, and once in a rare while if it is not.
ReplyDeleteDepends on ones mood too Debs on the time of visit :)
DeleteOh yes that is lovely, nice to save and utilize a small place. I love much that reclining seat with piles of wood under. It can be fun in temperate countries but might not do well here with us.
ReplyDeleteThose seats are made of some thin wire, like chicken wire Andrea. Might turn out to be not so practical and can catch clothing.
DeleteInteresting, but...more artistic than garden--odd, one would think the plants would be given more attention and effort in Holland...
ReplyDeleteLess plants more ornaments in that garden Gail, but I suppose it is a shop. You're right there, with it being Holland they shouldn't be in short supply of plants.
