Sweet little thing isn't it? :) Fab animals, cute and helpful in the garden!
I haven't heard them fight before, but I know what you mean. I had to rescue one before who has fallen on a hole and much to my surprise it hissed (I always thought they were the 'quiet' type), sounding like an asthmatic old man indeed.
My 12-old daughter loved "hedgies," as she calls them. In 4th grade she even wrote a persuasive essay on why hedgehogs should be legal as pets (they're not in California, and I'm not even sure that hedgehogs *can* be kept as pets). Hedgehogs are not native to the U.S. so over here they're considered exotic :-).
Eliza and Wicked Gardener, it's a cute animal indeed and a delight to have in the garden!
Janet, I'm surprised to know you haven't had any in your garden for years, I wonder why? We have loads in the garden, or at least passes by here all the time. I've encountered so many and you can hear them rustling away at times. The babies in the spring are even more adorable!
Hi Noel, they are a friend to the garden, helping keep slugs and snail at bay :)
That's interesting to hear Gerhard, it's sweet that your daughter has got an affection for these little creatures. They've got sweet faces it's almost tempting to give them a pat when you see one, which of course isn't a good idea! On the odd occasion I had to rescue or move them I had to wear really thick gloves :)
Have not seen one in 25 years (since left U.K.) Back then we had foxes in our rural wilderness. The vixen screams at night (very scary), sounds like an adult human. We also had adders (vipers) back then. Now we worry about scorpions, black widows and coral snakes. Loved life in the U.K. Great Post!

This gardening blog follows our journey as we create our Tropical and Exotic themed garden. We hope you'll enjoy the journey as much as we do. We started our Exotic Garden in 2005 and this site will show its development, as well as our travels, both abroad and within the UK to gardens, nurseries and friends. See also our full about page
Aren't they graet ? Have you ever heard them fighting - It sounds like an army of asthmatic old men snuffling and growling away in the hedgerow

I sure wish I could run into those in my garden! I'll have to settle for flying squirrels.
ReplyDeleteGlad for the label - I had no idea what this thing was. :D Cute though!
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous - we haven't had hedgehogs in our garden for the past few years and I miss them, and their snuffling noises in the late summer evenings.

ReplyDeleteThanks Dawn! We have foxes visiting the garden too, can be a messy lot but they're timid and not much of a bother. Now talk about exotic wildlife! :)
